Professional journey - Mr. van der Veen graduated from medical school at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. During his studies he interned at the former Aruba Eye Institute in Aruba, Dutch Antiles and in the Gold Coast Hospital in Southport, Australia. He then got selected for a PhD research at the department of Ophthalmology at the Maastricht University Medical Center, which led to the publication of his thesis titled ‘Macular Pigment in the Healthy and Diseased Retina’. This research was conducted in collaboration with the University of Manchester, England and the University Hospital of Bonn, Germany.
Subsequently he completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Maastricht University Hospital. Because Mr. van der Veen expressed a keen interest in the field of oculoplastic and orbital surgery early on in his residency, this was rewarded with a clinical oculoplastic and orbital surgery fellowship at the Amsterdam Orbital Center of the University Medical Center of Amsterdam, considered as one of the best in Europe and known worldwide for its elaborate research on Graves orbitopathy and many other orbital and oculoplastic disorders.
After this subspecialty training he worked several years as oculoplastic and orbital surgery consultant at the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands. During this time he also already practiced at the eye clinic Eyescan in Utrecht, which received the highest overall score for eyelid surgery in the Netherlands by Elsevier magazine in the years dr. van der Veen worked there. In 2019 he started as senior oculoplastic and orbital consultant at Hospital Moisés Broggi in Barcelona, Spain. This is currently the largest non-academic hospital of the Spanish peninsula and has a busy oculoplastic service. Next to this, he also serves as guest orbital surgeon in Bellvitge University Hospital in Barcelona.
Dr. van der Veen also practices in the private sector, with offices both in Barcelona and Utrecht, it is easy to make an appointment in either country. See Contact information.
